12.4.20 Community Update
Posted 12/4/20

Dear Miller Creek Community,

We hope that your family enjoyed the recent break and were able to find ways to play in the beautiful, crisp weather.

We miss having students in our schools and are writing to elaborate on the decision to return to remote instruction, provide additional information on actions that we are taking to resume school, and highlight opportunities that allow our parent community to support our efforts.

The difficult decision to return to remote learning was in response to several complexities including increased holiday travel, increased requests for independent study contracts, advised quarantines for students and staff, increased positive case rates, and more, all of which created stress on our small system. Specifically, these complexities have impacted staffing at every level (custodial, teachers, instructional assistants, centralized staff) with very limited capacity for backfill.

Our priority is the health and safety of our students and staff. We are not able to carry out our Site Specific Safety Protection Plans with integrity when juggling vacant positions or utilizing rotating substitutes. Since early November, we have managed 6 resignations, 3 retirements, 5 leave requests, 24 new hires or rehires, 5 changes in positions, and the identification of 4 permanent substitutes, one per school site. This is an unprecedented number within a six week period for our small district.

We Need Your Help

Many parents have asked how they can help support our efforts to keep schools open. One important need is to build our substitute teaching and support staff pools. We know that there are a number of parents, other family members, and neighbors in our community who have teaching credentials. Please consider joining our team.

To become a substitute teacher: Please visit the MCOE website (here) to sign up and/or get more information. Once you are registered to be a substitute, please contact the school office where you are interested in providing this service about setting up an orientation to learn about our COVID processes and protocols. The daily rate of pay is $150.00 and increases after the 10th consecutive day.

To become a substitute custodian, instructional assistant or office clerk: Please download our fillable application from the District website, save it and email it directly to Lauren Campbell, our HR specialist at lcampbell@millercreeksd.org. The hourly rates of pay are shown below:

Custodian

$20.96-$22.01, depending on assignment

Instructional Assistant

$16.84-$20.47, depending on assignment

Public Health guidance allows us to resume in person instruction and proceed with our phased reopening plan. With stable staffing in place, we have demonstrated that schools can open safely. We have managed three positive cases, which is to be expected, with no in school transmission. We have health staff at each school site, voluntary COVID testing for employees, incredible air quality solutions, small class sizes, daily health screening, stockpiled EPE, and increased support staff. Our systems have worked. Support our efforts by signing this community pledge promising to do your part in keeping our schools open.

Mental Health

Our teachers work hard to build classroom communities whether behind a screen or in person ensuring that every child feels like they belong. Even when in hybrid instruction, we are experiencing loss as a schoolwide community, missing out on events where we celebrate and cultivate togetherness. These feelings of loss or isolation are sometimes exacerbated during the holidays. As you care for your child at home, please remember that every school has counselors available to support students who are struggling. Please reach out to the counselors below when support is needed.

Community Testing

On December 29 and 30 we will host community COVID testing in the parking lot of Miller Creek Middle School using the Curative test kits used for our staff testing. The tests are non-invasive oral swabs and the results are shared within 48 hours. We need parent volunteers to run the check-in tables and provide simple directions to participants. Volunteers will not touch anyone and will be equipped with all the necessary EPE. A self guided training video will be provided to volunteers in advance. Sign up to volunteer by clicking here. We will be in touch with volunteers to schedule specific times. For those wanting to participate in testing, stay tuned for information on how to register. It is important that you register in advance as appointment times will fill quickly.

We can do this together and we thank you for your flexibility, patience and support!
